I've found the best place to go is Edwards Theaters at the Marketplace. Lots of parking, well designed theaters and a TON of movie choices!

I heard there are classes offered by NOR Parks department. You might want to check there.

I have a two year old niece and I was wondering where a good place to take her to burn off some of her energy would be?

I have found that my daughter loves My Gym on California Ave. It's a place where she can play with other children her age in a safe and supervised setting.

Anyone know of any used bookstores?

There aren't a ton of them around here. The Goodwill store at 9935 Rosedale Highway is now a used book store. There's a small one at 2828 Chester Avenue, Books, Books, etc. If you're looking for great used books deals, the SPCA is holding their annual book sale starting on Saturday, April 22. It's out at the East Hills Mall, near the Gottschalk's entrance. Hope this helps.

Thanks bakonewbie! I visited both bookstores on Friday! :) Found another one on Saturday called Book Exchange. The physical address is 3611 Stockdale Highway Suite L but you have to go down Real to get to it.

Do you know if Bakersfield has FREE "Movies in the Park" or "Bands in the Park"? Thanks!

For the person looking for banks: If you type the word "bank" into the search box at the top of this page, you'll see a Business Listings section with information on over 400 bank locations in the Bakersfield area, including addresses, phone numbers and links to maps. It works for just about any other type of business you're looking for, too!

Hi lakessler1, I'm not completely sure if this is what you're looking for, but there are a couple of options for you. The North of the River Recreation and Park department tend to show free movies once a month or so in one of their parks. These are typically kid-oriented films, like "Shrek" and are part of a larger family fun night. For more information about their upcoming events you can go to
http://www.norrecreation.or... If you're looking for more adult fare, it's not free, but the Fox Theater frequently shows independent films as part of an arrangement with FLICS. Last I heard, these films are only $4 for admission. You can find out about their schedule by going to http://www.flics.org/. Finally, on the music front, were you aware that the Marketplace holds free concerts on Thursday evenings (I think they start around 7 p.m. or so) from May through Sepetmber? Each week offers a different style and showcases some of the local talent Bakersfield is known for. If you are interested in getting a schedule, any of the merchants at the Marketplace should be able to assist you. The Makertplace is located at 9000 Ming Avenue. Hope I was able to help.

Lakessler1, I also think that the marketplace on Ming Ave holds free concerts in the summer every Thursday night. Just bring a blanket and relax on the grass.

Is there a place that offers just for fun cooking classes?

I believe that Cafe Med offers cooking classes. you might try and give them a call. I also thought I heard something about Olcott's occasionally having someone out there for classes, but I don't know much about it for sure. They might be worth calling as well. I wish there were more places that had regular classes.
