Various lakes throughout Kern County offer sailing and windsurfing. Permits are required for all county lakes. The cost is $60 per year for non-motorized vessels. There is a $45-per-year cost for Isabella; a three-day permit is $15.
Lake Isabella is popular because it has some of the highest winds in Kern County. Motorboats and personal watercraft permitted. 760-379-5646, www.kernrivervalley.com.
Lake Ming is open the second Saturday and Sunday of each month, plus Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. 868-7000.
Lake Woollomes near Delano is also open for sailing, rowboats and canoes. No powerboats are allowed.
Buena Vista Lake near Taft is open on a pay-per-use basis, with county permit holders exempt from that charge, although there is a $6-per-car charge. Those who aren’t exempt must pay a $7-per-vessel charge. Call 868-7050 for reservations.
Brite Lake near Taft is another lake open to sailing. There is a $5-per-car charge, as well as a $15 charge to camp per vehicle, $20 for full hookups, a $3 dumping fee and a $1 charge to walk or bike. For more details, call Tehachapi Valley Recreation at 822-3228.
