Where to ride
Kern River Parkway Bike Path: Mostly parallels the Kern River from Enos Lane west of Cal State Bakersfield to China Grade Loop just north of Gordon's Ferry, where it connects with Alfred Harrell Highway.
Rides for beginners: The ride to Shafter and back on Santa Fe Highway, starting at Beach Park and the Kern Bike Path. More adventurous riders can continue past Shafter to Wasco and Delano.
Road bike ride: Ride to Arvin, starting at the Circle K on Fairfax Road and following Tejon Highway to Arvin, then up Highway 223 and back on Bena Road and Edison Highway.
Climbing ride: Ride up Lion's Trail, via Bena Road and Edison Highway to Caliente.
Long-distance rides: Take North Chester Avenue to the Bakersfield-Glennville Road to Round Mountain Road. Follow Round Mountain Road over the hill and return to town following the Kern River. Make this a more advanced ride by following the Bakersfield-Glennville Road to Glennville and come back via Granite Station.
Breckenridge Road: Starting near Foothill High School, this is the most advanced ride, an extremely difficult climb up Breckenridge Mountain and back.
Organizations
Bike Bakersfield: 1708 Chester Ave., 321-9247. A local organization dedicated to all things related to biking. Whether you're interested in learning about traffic tips, the ins and outs of biking to work, or biking events in the area, Bike Bakersfield is a great place to start.
Kern Wheelmen: P.O. Box 9662, Bakersfield, 93389, 599-3292. The cycling club is a road bike organization for riders of all ability levels. The club has weekly training and social rides and organizes the annual Spooktacular ride each Halloween. There is also a monthly member newsletter. The club meets the second Monday of each month. Call for location.
Southern Sierra Fat Tire Association: 831-9231, 2001 Columbus Street #B, Bakersfield, 93305. Mountain-biking organization hosts three weekly rides, weekend events, monthly meetings and more. Check Web site for dates, locations and monthly newsletter.
South Valley Bicycle Coalition: Coordinates community efforts for facilities, offers safety classes and a free newsletter.
Team Action Sports: 9500 Brimhall Road, 833-4000. Conducts advanced group rides at 5:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during daylight saving time at Beach Park and at 12:15 p.m. in the winter months from the parking lot at Blockbuster at the corner of Chester and Columbus. Call for times on Saturday rides.
Team Bako: Tommy Bryant, 204-4486. Mountain biking team with a junior division for ages 12 to 18, and adult division for ages 18 and older. Meetings are once a month. There are several levels of competition, from beginner to expert. Team Bako also has an expedition group for tours and leads weekly group rides on Mondays, Wednesdays and weekends.
