The Grand Jury

The Kern County grand jury is made up of 19 citizens placed on committees that investigate and audit aspects of county government. Kern County Superior Court judges nominate four applicants each and those applicants are selected from random drawings. In addition to submitting annual reports and recommending changes to county agencies or cities, they also can conduct criminal hearings and issue criminal indictments. Grand jury reports are viewable on the Web site.

Federal Court

U.S. Bankruptcy Court: The court is not under the jurisdiction of Kern County Superior Court. Filings can be directed to the Fresno Division of the Eastern District of California. To file you must go to the court at 2500 Tulare St., Fresno. Occasional hearings are held at 1300 18th St. in Bakersfield. U.S. District Court: The Bakersfield satellite office of the Eastern District of California handles the arraignments of people who break federal law or are arrested or ticketed on federal land in Kern County.
