Bakersfield has a number of options for public transportation, both within the city and for those looking to head out of town.

Bakersfield’s primary mass transit system serves 160 square miles of the greater Bakersfield area, with 81 buses traveling 18 routes. All buses are equipped with bike racks and wheelchair lifts. Transit centers are the Downtown Transit Center, 22nd Street at Chester Avenue; Valley Plaza Southwest Transit Center, Wible Road at Valley Plaza Mall.
Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. Monday through Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Fares: Regular, 90 cents; senior (65 and older), 40 cents with GET senior ID card, valid California ID card or Medicare card; children under 5 free. Pass fares: Senior/special rider day pass, $1; Regular day pass, $2.25; monthly flash pass, $30; Sizzlin’ Summer youth pass, $45.

GET-A-Lift is a program through GET that provides specially equipped buses dedicated to curb-to-curb service for people unable to use fixed-route buses. Advance notice required, plus physician’s verification of disability. Fare: $1.50 each way. Companions (space permitting) $1.50 each way. Escorts ride free with doctor’s note. GET also offers a free on-call shuttle service to Meadows Field Airport from the downtown transit center. For reservations, call 869-6363 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week at least 24 hours and up to two weeks in advance. Only with customer request, the No. 3 bus route will go to the international terminal at the airport. Requests can be made by calling 869-6363 between 6:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.
