A number of programs are available to those in Kern County who wish to educate their children at home. Parents may partner with a public school through independent study or may privately tutor their children. The California Department of Education leaves it up to local school districts to determine whether a home school meets minimum standards regarding courses of study. Among the public school districts in Kern County that offer some independent study programs are Bakersfield City School District and Tehachapi Unified School District.

The Kern County Superintendent of Schools, some private schools and privately run charter schools also assist home-schoolers. These programs partner credentialed teachers with parents who choose to homeschool. In addition to providing texts and other materials, teachers meet with parents on a regular basis. The courses of study should follow those offered in public schools.

For general county information or to determine if your home schooling program complies with state law, call Valley Oaks Charter School at 633-5288 for elementary students and 636-4467 for high school students.

I am very upset about the introduction the the homeschooling section. It is very misleading. The public needs to know that homeschooling IS legal in CA. Yes, we are awaiting the results of a court case; however, the Governer, District Attorney, and the State Superintendent of Schools all support the right to homeschool. In fact, all of them filed briefs for the case in question, urging the court to uphold the law as it stands. Furthermore, the Governor has stated that if the courts do not protect the right to homeschool, the legistature will.

Other errors:  You don't need to "contact the school district/Valley Oaks Charter school to determine if your homeschooling program is legal". They want to entice you to enroll in their programs, so that they will recieve state funds for your child.

Parents can also homeschool legally by filing a simple form online, or by enrolling in a private school's satellite program, which provides oversight, support, testing, activities and more. If you want more information, contact me, Susan Lemons, "Thinking About Homeschooling", at 827-0540, or at mentormom@bak.rr.com . Don't be scared away from homeschooling by the legal mumbo-jumbo. Homeschooling is legal for non-credentialed parents.
