Frazier Park, CA
Winter sports enthusiasts from both ends of the Grapevine know the Frazier Mountain area for its snow-covered slopes, while warm-weather adventurers love it for its many miles of hiking trails, campgrounds and off-road vehicle routes circling the 8,831-foot-high Mt. Pinos.
Lying mostly within the vast Los Padres National Forest, a handful of unincorporated communities comprise the greater Frazier Mountain area, spanning nearly 20 miles from Interstate 5 to Pine Mountain Club.
At its heart is the community of Frazier Park, home to more than 2,000 of an estimated 10,000 residents who call the rugged mountain area home and vacation homeowners who call it home away from home.
Frazier Park serves the civic and commercial needs of mountain dwellers with a post office, bank, market, library, restaurants and shops.
The area's early inhabitants include members of several American Indian tribes collectively known as the Tejon Indians, Spanish and Mexican land grant holders and settlers who arrived in the mid- to late-1800s and whose names still identify local land, landmarks, streets and buildings.
Several decades of slow growth produced the surrounding communities of Lebec, Gorman, Lake of the Woods, Pinon Pines, Lockwood Valley and, most recently, Pine Mountain Club, established in 1971. At the area¹s eastern edge, Lebec is home to more than 1,000 residents, including workers of the 270,000-acre Tejon Ranch.
The ranch spent more than a century playing a major role in Kern County's agriculture industry since its founding in 1843 by a Union Army general. It produced a variety of crops, including wine grapes, almonds and pistachios.
Today, its business is now focused on commercial and residential real estate development.
Tejon Ranch Co.'s planned projects include the 23,000-residential-unit Centennial community near Gorman, as well as industrial complexes along a stretch of Interstate 5.
The company also plans to build a residential community near Castac Lake (not to be confused with Castaic Lake further south) named Tejon Mountain Village, featuring upscale estates, hotels, restaurants and golf courses.
To the west, Pine Mountain Club, a private community, features a golf course, equestrian facilities, shops, restaurants and lodging for its residents, who numbered 1,600 in the 2000 Census, and their guests. The village is a favorite retreat for artists, musicians, writers, actors and movie industry professionals.
In between, homes range from modest single-family dwellings on small lots to large ranch estates on multi-acre parcels.
Many mountain-area residents commute to jobs in the cities of Bakersfield and Los Angeles.
