Beginning Thursday, the stately Petroleum Club of Bakersfield is hosting weekly wine tastings -- and you don't have to be a club member or wine aficionado to attend. The tastings are open to the public. They'll be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every Thursday at the club. From its perch atop the Stockdale Towers on California Avenue, the club offers a sweeping view of the city. Admission is $20, which includes the featured wines and appetizers. Local charities benefit. Operations manager LiLi Marsha noted that Thursdays are "a great day to do something casual and start winding down" for the weekend. Hence, the weekly event is called Wine Down. Marsha said the nonprofit petroleum club likes to open its doors to the community whenever possible. Beginning Sunday, the club will hold a gospel brunch -- with live gospel music -- from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the third Sunday of every month.
