Even today I can't help but smile at the memory of last Wednesday night! It started out very, very, slow ... and for awhile Joe, Brandon, Lindsey and I thought we were going to be the only ones on stage. With DJ Kyle in Cuyama, and a slow start to the evening, it looked like we'd have an uneventful, even BORING night, but we were sooooo wrong!

We promised everyone that we'd have two styles of karaoke nights: Tuesday nights for families, and Wednesday nights for adults who wanted to have a little fun. This Wednesday the crowd pulled out the stops and provided us with a fun party that, let's just say, is a little more grown up than the kids can handle.

Oh Sugar! Give Me Kidney Stones, Osteoporosis, Heart Disease And Tooth Decay!?

Fat has been the past century’s health hazard and the most damaging ingredient in the American diet. I beg your pardon but the real bad, bad guy damaging the American diet is SUGAR; sorry but sugar is the “oh- so- sweet addiction” most people are hooked on. The average American consumes a whipping 45.1 lb. of high-fructose corn syrup per year and about 20 teaspoons of sugar a day according to USDA surveys. This accounts for more than 10 percent of the average calories for adults and 20 percent for teenagers. High oh- so- sweet sugar diets are currently linked to increased risk for diabetes, Alzheimer’s, some type of cancer, and obesity.

Medical evidence also shows that high sugar diets can promote kidney stones, osteoporosis, heart disease, tooth decay and obesity. People who follow a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet have reduced levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and increased levels of triglycerides and of course higher levels of blood sugar and insulin. Now, what kind of foods raises blood sugar levels? The worst among many offenders are mashed potatoes, most refined carbohydrates such as pasta, white rice and most breads. Why? Because these foods quickly convert to sugar in the body and the pancreas is not able to tell the difference as far as the type of sugar being metabolized. Sugar found in fruits such as apples, bananas, berries or even sugarcane are in their natural state and therefore come packed with vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed for its complete digestion.

Seriously, did you know sugar is an immune system depressor? If you can remove sugar from your diet you can become healthy rich because your body and your brain will be able to function at its peak and you will be able to accomplish more working from within with a powerhouse of energy. All your creative juices will come alive and not only that; you can make a whole bunch of wonderful things happen when you feel great. Sugar is addictive; have you noticed when kids eat lots of foods with sugar in it they suddenly become very hyper and when the sugar is low in their blood they become withdrawn but you can completely eliminate sugar from your and your kids diet with the assistance of other natural ingredients available in most health food markets such as 100 % Stevia, a calorie free herbal dietary supplement and it has a delicious flavor.

A good habit to get into is eating small, well-proportioned meals throughout the day. These would consist of high-quality protein, fat and carbohydrate such as basmati or brown rice, whole grain bread, and whole wheat pasta.
Why People don't want to exercise?

People don’t care to but everyone should care. If most people knew their quality of life may depend on it, then they would definitely care.

They don’t think exercise should be a daily priority because they don’t know how it can benefit them. But if they’d only try it, they would feel the before-and-after effects and never stop exercising again.

Ashamed of physical appearance. They are just shooting themselves on the foot by feeling ashamed; they don’t know the moment they make the decision to exercise, they will immediately find a “workout pal” at their local gym to help them understand why exercise should be a “high priority” in their daily life.

Physical injury. Chronic physical health issues should be addressed through a qualified physical therapist who could walk them through a limitless variety of fun and safe exercises and who can give approval before starting an exercise program. There is a training method called functional-rehabilitation exercises which utilizes the triplanar motion concept. Tri-planar refers to three planes of motion incorporated and are as follows: frontal or side-to-side motion, sagittal or forward and back motion and transverse or rotational motion. Functional exercises are easy to do and once you learn the ropes you will find it enjoyable. In fact, there is no need of equipment, they are bodyweight exercises and if you prefer to exercise with equipment there are combinations of movement done with and without equipment, individually, or in groups.

Too busy tired or bored. Actually exercising is an antidote for tiredness and boredom. You will be on your way to preventing tiredness and boredom because it will make you feel thoroughly energized not only physically but mentally as well. Some people blame it on their busy schedule to make a commitment but all they need to do is to give their bodies a chance to find out there are a variety of fun exercises combined with proper nutritional programs that can help in putting the muscles in kickboxing mode by adding muscle definition, strength, and increased energy.

Oats are packed with soluble fiber. Oats fiber contain lots of carbs but the fiber slows the release of sugars. Oats also contain 10 grams of protein per half-cup serving. It is a great source of energy and aids in muscle building. Other wonderful options are flaxseed and wild rice. Have you tried other foods that made you feel energized? Please share your findings here.

When we moved here due to a job transfer from Sacramento I was relieved.

Never really liked Sacto very much and knew nothing about Bakersfield.

But the first GOOD thing about it here is I found it easy to get around. I am prone to getting lost so the size of Bakersfield came to my advantage in learning my way around.

The weather? Love it!!

The people seem more friendly or at least more honest here. I like that!

Well, here I am in Bakesfield, CA. Moved here from LA about 6 months ago, for work, and my coworkers were misinformed about this town. But people in LA don't recognize any town outside the borders of LA, so that's not so surprising.

Love the desert; somehow, to me, it's got a 'clear' feeling. BUT, now that I'm here, what next? I work and workout a lot, so weekends are about the only time I have for avocational pursuits. I try to make time to ride my bike; just for fun, no Tour de France kind of thing; that seems like work not fun.

Love music, and love to hear new and upcoming bands (sorry, no country or jazz), mostly rock, alternative, ethnic etc. but am reluctant to go to clubs alone. In most social settings, not being a 20, or even a 30 something is akin to having the plague, but when you're new, no companions to these kinds of venues. May be it's just me, but this kind of experience is a bit unsettling.

Guess I am a walking contradiction; 56 year old birthday tacked onto a 30 year old me. I don't notice much difference between then and now except, I make less bad decisions, and I'm not so confused anymore. I have a good job, and no credit card debt; divorce was good for something :) So, how best to put my good fortune to good use? Open to suggestions, Bakersfield.

Scottsdale, AZ---This past Sunday, November 4th. local Big Air Dog, Prince Andy Flores, owned and trained by Tasha & Octavio Flores, won the Splash Dogs Dock Diving Junior Division World Championship of the USAA (United States Agility Association) in cooperation with the Cynosports World Games. The Cynosports World Games characterizes canine sports in the Olympic spirit, featuring leading dog sports from around the world in a single venue. Olympic Gold Medalist Bruce Jenner was the host of this years event. The events, covering over 100 acres, brought competitors from fourteen countries, including Japan, China, Spain, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Russia and of course the United States, in dog sports together to name a World Champion in the following sports: Dog Agility, Flyball, Dock Diving, Flying Disc, Extreme Vertical, Herding and many more. These animals are real athlete's, doing real sports, and the World Game competitors have risen to the top of their game.

Local Labador, 9 month old Prince Andy Flores, qualified for these world games last July and came through Sunday's World Championships with flying colors, winning the Junior Division World Title with a jump of 18' 9". Andy also set a new Cynosports World Record for the Junior Division by jumping 19' 3" in the Simi-finals. Dock Jumping Dogs do not reach their potential until between the ages of 3 and 5 years of age, so Andy has just began his quest for the top. Andy will now take some time off before starting training for next years events.

The canine sports at the Cynosports World Games are open to all breeds of dogs--purebred and mixed breed alike. All owners and their dogs are encouraged to attend one of the Splash Dog events around the county. You may be surprised at what your dog can do? There are Splash Dog divisions for every dog to compete in.
Lap Dog Division--Dogs under 16" in height
                 Splash Dog Division---0' 0" to 9' 11"
                 Junior Division---- 10' 0" to 14' 11"
                 Senior Division---- 15' 0" to 19' 11"
                 Professional Division---- 20' 0" to 22' 11"
Extreme Division---- 23' 0" and above

A new World Record was also set at these games, by a 5 year old dog named Henry, out of Northern California, with a jump of 26' 11". All measurements were official "Dock Dog" measurements from the end of the dock to the base of the dogs tail as it enters the water.

Come out and give it a try. I know both you and your dog will have the time of your lives.
