I admit it, I was skeptical about this town before I moved here in 2003. After all, I was living in Berkeley, a stark difference from Bakersfield.

Buck Owens who? Armpit of what? Valley Fever huh?

Now that I've settled here — I even own a home! — I am quick to spread out the welcome mat for new hires at The Californian. Often they are young and come from urban areas all over the country. Our company attracts them because we are on the cutting edge of the industry and offer great experience.

I am glad I chose to come to Bakersfield. I am just as content staying home to work on my house remodel as I am traveling for day trips to the mountains, Los Angeles or the coast. And never once have I complained that "there's nothing to do in Bakersfield."

I always find new things to do!
